Reading May Help Stop The Decline In Language And Culture

By Barbara Morgan

Society is on the brink of losing colorful language, as young people are learning to spell using text speech without punctuation of any kind. This language of acronyms teaching us nothing, and is resulting in a general decline in the number of words we can use. Only through reading does a young person gain a grasp of colorful language, and proper spelling and use of words.

When a child reads they are learning new words, new ways to use colorful language, and it helps to improve their spelling and basic comprehension. It has long been known that newspapers are written at a sixth grade level. It is unacceptable that supposedly literate adults graduating from public schools find it challenging to read even the most basic newspaper articles.

When a person reads, they are whisked away on an adventure, or they can be taught an entirely new skill. This is an excellent way to pass a rainy day, and results in much more benefit to the young person than playing video games or watching television. Your children will not be better people as a result of watching five seasons of Jersey Shore, but their understanding of the world can be expanded in a single afternoon spent with a science fiction novel.

Children who are read to when they are young are more interested in learning what books are all about. Young people who see their parents read on a regular basis typically have a greater interest books as they grow older. They can be encouraged to read either by their desire to please their parents, or by the fact that they have parents who continue to show an interest in learning new things well into adulthood.

With the skills of spelling, grammar, and punctuation that are sharpened when we read, a young person is given an edge over their peers in all walks of life. Improved comprehension means school learning becomes easier and more enjoyable. Those who enjoy school are more likely to pursue further education later in life.

A love of learning, whether a person decides to attend college or not, can only provide them with a richer, fuller life in the long term. There are many successful people out there who are self-made individuals. The self made man or woman is a modern day explorer who who never loses a love of learning, knowing, and doing new and exciting things in their life.

The World Wide Web makes information available to anyone, on any topic, at any time day or night. Every man, woman, and child could be a self-made intellectual with this powerful tool at their fingertips. Unfortunately, most adults use this tool simply to indulge the most base of impulses by spending all their time absorbed in video games and pornographic material.

Without readers, society will lose writers, and eventually there will be no more books. What will the next generation look like if no more books are being published, and society no longer spawns creative writers. What will the people of the future be like if they grow up only interested in play, with no regard for learning new things.
