Useful Information Regarding Hipot Tester

By Diane Bailey

The term hipot test refers to high potential or high volt voltage check. The other term for this analysis is dielectric withstand test. This is a test of electrical components done with the goal of checking the suitability of electrical insulation. The assessment is supposed to certify that there is no electrical leakage from one part to another in electric gadgets. It is the reverse of continuity test. Here are facts regarding Hipot tester.

Hipot testing is supposed to be nondestructive to determine the adequacy of electrical insulation. The testing is high-voltage and it is applied to all electrical devices for a given period of time so as to ensure that the insulation is not marginal. The process involves the application of high amounts of voltage to the insulation.

The reason for the process is to detect the presence of nicked or crushed insulation in a device. It also enables the identification corrosive or conductive contaminants, stray wire strands, and braided defensive around conductors. Tolerance mistakes in cables and troubles in terminal spacing can also be diagnosed easily by using hipot testing. Voltage that is used on this system is commonly two times more than the operating voltage.

Hipot analyzers are the devices applied in Hipot testing. One side of the supply is normally connected to safety ground in a typical tester. The other side of the supply connects the conductor that has to be tested. Only two forms of contact to which the conductors can be linked exist in this arrangement. That is the voltage and ground.

In cases where there are 2 contacts that have to be connected, then one needs to be linked to the voltage whereas the other one is connected to ground. This type of connection is crucial as it guarantees that contacts get isolated from other kinds of contacts. If insulation between the two conductors is insufficient, then a small charge will flow between the two conductors when a massive voltage is passed through.

Even though the flow of such a small current is usually acceptable, a breakdown of solid or air insulation is not supposed to occur in any case. High voltage is usually used in these tests because it is believed that any product is usually subjected to normal day-to-day transient over voltages. As such, in case such variations in voltages occur during the day, the product is supposed to remain operational and safe.

There are several requirements that are normally checked while carrying out this evaluation. The various requirements need the voltage to get applied for a distinct amount of time. Under IEC 06950 standards, the analysis is meant to be carried out continuously for a period of one minute. Nevertheless, a typical rule is to use 110-220 percent of working voltage of the product plus a thousand volts for 1 to 2 seconds.

There are also specifications for the amount of current that need to be applied. Currently, there are several different kinds of testers in the market that one can buy. Different testers are meant for different classes of products. As such, it is important to know which tester to use for certain applications.
